Staffan Fenander: On finding your way in music ? JOURNAL OF ...

Carol Forsloff ??If you wanted to learn everything you could about the world of music in the past five decades or so, where would you look?? Most folks might think it would be America, but indeed the repository of great information on a variety of music styles is a man from Sweden, Staffan Fenander, whose delightful performances demonstrate his great knowledge of the world?s folk and standard tunes.

I interviewed Fenander, one of the many musicians on Fandalism, an international music community. The following are his responses to a set of interview questions about how he started in music and how he came to amass such a large storehouse of songs over the years.

Q: How did you get started with your interest in music?

To me , as for so many others of my generation (born in 1947),? it all started with Rock?n?Roll, my big sister was an Elvis Presley fan and I can vividly remember King Creole, Heartbreak Hotel, and all those other great rock songs. She bought singles and EP?s and brought them home to our old radio-grammo-phone. Like others our age, when our parents were away we played them loudly She also liked the calypso and folk songs of Harry Belafonte and so gave me my first American folk songs and West Indian influence.

In Sweden at that time, middle 50s, there were only two, state-controlled radio channels; no commercial radio and no TV at all! (TV was introduced in the late 50s?) One of the channels played only classical music and the other had sermons, documentary programs, talk shows, and sometime light entertainment music. The only program that featured rock?n?roll was a program about cars and this was the highlight of the week when the guy played the rock song of the week, and there only was one! No wonder it made some impact on us starved kids.

I started buying records in the late 50s and have done so ever since , got a good collection of records with all kinds of music. I heard my first Bob Dylan song, my first blues song and my first Duke Ellington song..hooked for life.

Q: What styles do you particularly like and when did you start playing?

I started playing blues and folk guitar and discovered that I had a knack of learning song lyrics very quickly, don?t know why but I come from a family where literature was a natural art form, my mother worked in a book-shop and both my sister and I became librarians, so poetry and the written word have always been very important to me. In the early 70s, I once sat down and counted how many songs I knew at that time and the figure was around 700 songs. Today I do not dare start counting.

I learned to play guitar as a teen, then played at parties and at friends houses, around the campfires music appropriate for that occasion, which made a great atmosphere for swapping and learning songs? I went to London in the 60s for many musical trips, seeing groups like Pink Floyd, John Mayall, King Crimson and many others, folk singers like Sandy Denny, Bert Jansch etc. In this way, I picked up songs everywhere. In 1971, I started playing as a busker/street-singer , hitch-hiking in Europe . And along the way I made some money. I learned to entertain an audience, sing with volume and how to present a song and realized that I could make money on my music. A couple of years later, I started playing in pubs, student places, hospitals etc. First alone, then in a duo, and finally in a 5-piece band, ?The Hot Rats?, that existed on a semi-professional level for 5-6 years. That was a great experience, learning to play with others, singing 3-part harmony etc. Our music included a variety of styles and our own inventions.

Q: You seem to have a sophistication with music around the world. How did you acquire it and remember the lyrics and the music?

The secret of learning different types of songs is just to pick up and play everything you like, from all genres, play them obsessively, study them, find the sheet music or the lyrics, read them and learn! I?ve never stopped learning playing and singing ? keeps your brain working!

All genres appeal to me; but since I grew up in the 50s and 60s, the music from these decades will of course always be closest to my heart.

A good story or good poetry and a good chorus are invaluable for remembering a song, if you get inside a story and feel it you never forget it. The music comes along free.

Q: How would you advise a young person to get started?

Don?t rely on trends, commercials and talent programs on television.???? I would advise someone starting out today to play, play, play and listen, listen, listen to all kinds of styles. Find your own voice and stay true to your ideals? skip the rock dream and engage in your music instead.

Q: What do you get out of being a part of a musical community such as Fandalism?

Fandalism and other communities like it offer communication and sharing , seeing and hearing others and being seen and heard. For me it has been a really rewarding experience to experience what others are doing and sharing my kind of music. It has pushed me into learning new songs, arrange and present my old songs in a new way, and get feedback from other Fandos.

Q: What are your personal choices for Top Ten Songs?

That is impossible. There is a lot of new music that I like. But there is music I can?t stand in the music world of today. When rock music started, it was a rebellion music, rebellion against conventions and strict, petty morals. But gradually the music industry incorporated this, unarming the music and making it slick and predictable. New generations try to revive these feelings and express their music in new ways, punk and hip-hop are later examples of this; but again the music and artists quickly got eaten up by the industry.

The 80s and 90s were not fun for rock music, many like me gave up listening to rock? But with new social media like the Internet, smaller record labels, and more place for live music etc, the situation has improved vastly. Influences from other music forms have enriched the new music, we now have a lively world music scene. Kids study and play jazz in new ways, incorporating electronica and rock elements and acoustic musicians. Different forms of production and distribution frees the music from the?dependence?on large corporations and labels. Now you don?t have to have a hit record at all.

My advice to new musicians is stay out of the big business, don?t look towards trends and hit records. Play your music and listen to many varieties. Look at the unconventional music and dig deep in the past, there is so much good, powerful music there, and find new ways, experiment, and don?t worry! If your music is good, it will come out.

Q: Who are some of your favorite ?performers and types of music?

Music goes in cycles. We are now seeing lots of different types of music. There has been a return of roots music because there is always a need for that kind of authentic voice and sound.

My personal choices include Lennon/McCartney for their amazing melodic quality, their ability to compose in all kinds of styles and for their willingness to experiment; Joni Mitchell for her original strength to use unusual tunings and harmonies in her music;?Chuck Berry for giving us teenagers a new and own language in the 50s; and Bob Dylan for expanding poetry to rock.

Q: Tell us about your own music career and how music fits in your life?

My music career has been a long and winding road!? Apart from a period of maybe 10-15 years in the 70s and 80s when music was a welcome extra income for me I have always had music as an engaging hobby and have been very satisfied with that. I can vividly remember a period when I had played in pubs and other places several times a week for a year or so, then got a little fed up with music and didn?t touch my guitar for a couple of months. I have not used music as a sole occupation so I could concentrate on my family. I have no ambitions other than refine my technique, learn more songs and chords, maybe more instruments? to have fun and satisfy myself..? I am real happy to see and hear that people like what I am doing.

The Naked Truth about Audio Visual Systems in San Diego ...

The Naked Truth about Audio Visual Systems in San Diego

Author (louisahemstreet). Submitted on Wed, 24 Oct 2012

Different music inclinations, does your household have? In every nook and corner of your San Diego home, do you desire multimedia to be offered? If both your answers are "yes", then establishing an audio visual system in San Diego is the right solution.

Having your very own entire residence or multi-room audio visual system can provide enjoyment and contentment to every relative. Nonetheless, planning to put in one for your house can be puzzling as there is a variety of systems to choose from. Before heading out and buying the numerous components for your system, there are numerous standard things that should be looked at.

The number of zones or rooms in your system is the first thing that should be thought about. This is just what basically separates an entire home and a multi-room system; an entire house system covers every space of the house while a multi-room covers around 2 to four rooms. The number of zones you prefer for your audio visual system also affects the difficulty of its installation.

As soon as the number of zones has actually been settled, you should next figure out the number of media sources (CD members, MP3 members, FM radio, and others) for your system. Do you wish each zone to have its own media source, or do you wish it streamlined with only one source for all the zones? Your choice on the number of sources usually influences the number and complexity of parts you require for your residence system.

Due to considerable improvements in wi-fi modern technology, distribution of media to different areas around your home has actually become much simpler. Due to the fact that running wires with different parts of your home is the most tough part of wired audio aesthetic system installments, the simplicity that wi-fi systems bring is coming to be popular with more customers. Nonetheless, wired systems have a benefit over wireless variants when it concerns seem and video quality, control, and flexibility.

Speakers are crucial elements in every audio visual system, so you should make sure that you just purchase from high-grade providers, such as Crestron in San Diego. You typically have 2 options when it comes to speakers: in-wall and conventional. While in-wall speakers offer space-saving modern technology for your residence, traditional speakers have a benefit regarding the flexibility of its positioning and its upgradability. For more info, go to stereos.about.com.

Hanging in there: Koalas have low genetic diversity

    Wednesday, October 24, 2012

A species relies on genetic diversity to survive and low diversity usually indicates that there has been inbreeding due to a decrease in population size. By looking at historic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from museum samples, new research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Genetics has found that koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) have had low genetic diversity for over 120 years.

The genetic diversity of koalas is known to be low in modern populations but historical reports suggest that koala populations have had a chequered past. When Europeans first noticed koalas in the late18th century they noted that numbers of this newly described species (originally called Lipurus cinereus) were very low due to Aboriginal hunting and they believed that the species would soon become extinct. Instead hunting declined allowing the koala to become a common animal by the mid 1800s.

At this point in time koala fur became fashionable and the international fur trade decimated the population once more. The koala population was also hit by loss of their habitat to European settlement, and by devastating epidemic diseases such as Chlamydia.

Researchers from Germany, Denmark and the USA compared the mitochondrial DNA of modern koalas and 14 museum specimens from across the world (where the date of the specimen was known) to see how these changes in population sizes had affected koala genetic diversity. Despite the 14 historic koalas being from different places and time points, they each had only one of four different haplotypes (variations in the mtDNA hypervariable region) and all of these can be found in modern koalas.

Prof Alex Greenwood, from the Leibniz-Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, who led this study, commented, "We thought that, like other species such as the grey wolf where the population has recently declined, there should be greater diversity in museum samples than modern specimens. We found this not to be true. The event which reduced the genetic diversity of koalas must have happened a long time ago, perhaps during the late Pleistocene when the larger species of koala, P. stirtoni, became extinct."

Low genetic diversity may mean that the species is less able to survive changes to its environment such as global warming, or competing for habitat with humans. The low diversity may also be responsible for the widespread inability of the koala to resist diseases such as Chlamydia and the newly discovered koala retrovirus (KoRV).

ARM posts healthy Q3 profits up 22 percent thanks to smart TVs and other new markets

British chip designer ARM has just revealed its accounts for Q3 2012 and they show a familiar pattern: namely, a double-digit rise in both revenue (up 20 percent to £144.6 million) and pre-tax earnings (up 22 percent to £68.1 million). According to Reuters, the company is attributing its latest bout of success to making "further inroads" into growing markets like smart TVs and microcontrollers. Of course, all of this is stands in stark contrast to the traditional x86 PC world, where giants like Intel and AMD have been struggling with weak demand.

Unconventional energy jobs: 1.7 million and counting

Unconventional energy boom is creating so many new jobs it's getting hard to call it unconventional. By 2015, production of unconventional oil will outstrip conventional oil, according to a new report.

    By Laurent Belsie,?Staff writer / October 23, 2012

In this 2011 photo, hundreds of drilling pipes are stacked at a rail center in Gardendale, Texas. Energy companies have leased hundreds of thousands of acres in South Texas and are drilling oil and gas wells on the Eagle Ford shale formation. By 2020, according to one study, the unconventional oil field could account for $11.6 billion and nearly 68,000 jobs in a 24-county area.

"Unconventional" oil and gas drilling supports 1.7 million jobs, according to a new report. By 2020, it will support another 1.3 million new positions.

The new unconventional extraction methods ? called "fracking" ? are creating so much energy so fast that by 2015 the United States will produce more oil from unconventional than conventional means, according to the new report from IHS Global Insight, an economic forecasting firm based in Lexington, Mass.

The jobs boom isn't evenly distributed. Everyone knows about North Dakota, where fracking has created something of an oil rush. The state has had the most robust job growth over the past year and the lowest unemployment rate of any state in the US.

But fracking has also created a jobs boom in Pennsylvania, the center of growing natural gas extraction from the huge Marcellus formation. The boom in energy jobs is far less noticeable in Pennsylvania than North Dakota because the Keystone State has a far more diversified economy.

Overall, that growth has been tepid. Pennsylvania ranks only No. 37 among the 50 states in terms of job creation over the past year. But its mining sector has nearly doubled in the past three years, with 39,100 workers as of September, according to the Department of Labor. Almost all those new jobs have come from something other than coal mining ? in other words, the new fracking industry.

Those jobs serve as an important multiplier. IHS estimates that only 20 percent of the 3 million workers supported by unconventional oil and gas in 2015 will be directly employed by oil and gas extraction companies. Another 30 percent will be employed by suppliers to those companies. Fully half will be other jobs generated by the spending of those workers.

That's the impact of good-paying jobs: They generate even more employment. And in the meantime, the natural gas they're producing is keeping electricity rates down for many Americans.

Of course, the boom in oil, and, especially natural gas, has not been a positive for everyone. Big coal states have suffered as utilities move to replace coal with cheaper natural gas to generate electricity. While Pennsylvania has generated 15.2 million mining jobs outside the coal industry in the past three years, neighboring West Virginia has lost 5,400 jobs in the past year alone and now ranks dead last (along with Wisconsin) among the states in terms of overall jobs growth.

NYC's billionaire mayor pledges $125k against MN marriage amendment

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has vowed to donate $10 million of his personal fortune to political causes, including gay marriage ballot initiatives, around the country by election day. Yesterday, that pledge came to Minnesota.

The billionaire businessman-turned-politician announced $375,000 in donations to campaigns working to legalize gay marriage in Maine and Washington, and another $125,000 to Minnesotans United for all Families, the group behind all those orange "Vote No" yard signs.

That adds up to a cool half-million in support of same sex marriage on Monday alone. Earlier this month, the mayor gave a Maryland effort an additional $250,000.

In response to Bloomberg's gift, a "challenge grant," a dozen local MN United supporters have already joined to offer a $125,000 match.

Several business leaders, from the Twins-owning Pohlad family to major corporations like General Mills, have opposed the marriage amendment from the start. Richard Carlbom, MN United campaign manager, emphasized the business angle following Bloomberg's announcement.

"Business leaders across the state -- and those around the nation, like Mayor Bloomberg -- have made it clear that this amendment is bad for business," he said in a statement. "In order to keep our state a thriving and competitive place to live and do business, we must maintain our status as a national leader in attracting top talent."

Kate Brickman, spokesperson for MN United, described an enthusiastic mood in the Vote No camp following the news. "We're thrilled to see people helping us in these final weeks," she says.

Minnesota for Marriage, the group working to pass the amendment, is predictably less excited.

"We believe it is the people of Minnesota who should decide the question of marriage, not out-of-state donors like Bloomberg," a spokesperson for the Vote Yes-ers, Chuck Darrell, told the Associated Press.

Last July, New York passed its own marriage equality law, making it one of six states, plus D.C., where anyone can wed anyone. Our own proposed amendment, of course, wouldn't add us to those ranks: Minnesotans won't be voting on whether or not to legalize same sex marriage, but instead, whether or not to amend the state Constitution to make it even more illegal than it already is.

Since that's a little depressing, here's a fun picture of Mayor Bloomberg waving a pride flag.

UN planning peacekeeping force for Syria

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The United Nations is already planning for a peacekeeping force in Syria should a cease-fire in that country take hold and pending a Security Council mandate, the U.N. peacekeeping chief said Monday.

Herve Ladsous said, however, it was still too early to say how many peacekeepers might be deployed in such an eventual force.

"I would confirm that, of course, we are giving a lot of thought to what would happen if and when a political solution or at least a cease-fire would emerge," Ladsous told reporters at a U.N. briefing.

U.N. and Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus on Sunday as part of his push for a cease-fire between rebels and government forces for the Eid al-Adha holiday, which begins Oct. 26.

Syria's state-run news agency SANA said Damascus supports the truce proposal, but would not commit to halting fire during a four-day Muslim holiday until Western countries and their Gulf allies stop supporting rebels and halt their weapons supplies to the anti-regime fighters.

Brahimi told reporters, following a closed-door meeting, that he also had held talks earlier with opposition groups inside and outside the country and received "promises" but not a "commitment" from them to honor the cease-fire.

Brahimi replaced Kofi Annan as envoy to Syria after the former U.N. secretary-general resigned last August, frustrated by a lack of progress.

Under Annan's peace plan the U.N. sent a 300-strong unarmed observer mission to Syria to oversee the cessation of violence but the team was forced to withdraw in August because of escalating fighting which has continued until today.

"It's a shocking fact that everyday 150 to 200 civilians are killed and it has almost become part of the background noise and it is simply unacceptable," Ladsous said.

Diplomats say that Ladsous has told Brahimi he could put together a force of up to 3,000 peacekeepers in the event a longer truce took hold.

But Ladsous said, "it certainly would be premature to mention a figure because it would depend on the situation."

The deployment of any U.N. peacekeeping force would be contingent on the approval of the 15-member Security Council, which has long been deadlocked over the issue of Syria. Permanent members Russia and China have to date vetoed three resolutions on Syria because they threatened sanctions against Assad's government.

    Article Body:
Hello, and congratulations on becoming an Internet Entrepreneur with your very own Web Business!!! To get you fast-tracked, we have included a vast selection of tips and tricks to make your online business a success that it deserves to be.

    1) First of all, choose a domain name that is somehow related to the business you are in. For?? example, if you are looking for a domain name for your pillow business, you might want to try using a name like?. It is important to use a "real" domain name. Your visitors will not take your business seriously if you use a free domain name like? . A lot of the good domain names are already spoken for, but if you are patient enough, you will search and find one that is still available. If you think that you will need more than one domain name, get that one now too, as thousands of names are taken up each day. Do a search under "Google" using "cheap domain names" as your search words. You will find some very reasonably priced domain registrars. They are a full service operation offering web hosting and cheap, cheap, cheap domain registration.

    2) You will need a hosting service for your domain name. The hosting service allows your domain name and all of its content to be viewed on the internet. This is easy to handle. You have basically two choices here. You can pay for the hosting service or get it for free. If money is not really a problem for you, then you may want to choose the paid version. Just do a search using "Google" with "web hosting" as your search words, and take your pick from the thousands of sites. You will find that the price charged varies wildly depending the services required. Now if you want to explore the free version?. There are a lot of free hosting companies on the internet. The problem with these free hosting companies is that they all require some sort of pop-up banner, static header or footer banner, or both, to be placed on each and every web page. These banners can contain all kinds of advertising, and some, or all of it, may not be welcome to the viewers on your web site. The free hosting option is certainly not the best one to explore. To save you time, I would recommend again for the most economical hosting of your web site.

    3) Once you have your domain name and hosting service taken care of, you will probably need a way of uploading your web content to your site. Sometimes your web hosting service provider includes a site manager that allows this function. If not, then you might want to look into downloading some FTP software such as WS_FTP for example .? While you are downloading software, you may also want to add WINZIP ? located at www.WinZip.com to your download list. WINZIP allows you to "unzip" your "PillowSleep" file for example. A file is initially "zipped" to compress it for ease of downloading. To use this download zip file, you will have to "unzip" it first.

    4) Your "PillowSleep" site probably needs a little more customizing. Look at other pillow sites on the internet for comparison and see what could be improved visually on your site. Does it need any flashy graphics? There are many free graphics available on the internet? - just do a search with google. Once you are happy with the way your web site looks, it's now time to focus on that fun part ? html coding. Unless you are very comfortable using "html" coding, don't touch the "html" coding on the "PillowSleep" pages at all. If you are comfortable using "hml", then you could add things like Title, Meta Keywords, Meta Descriptions, etc., which would allow the search engines to find your web site much easier.? The use of "keyword phrases" is much more useful than just using "keywords", because it makes your web site more search specific. Go ahead and add a "Pillow" links page too. Another tip is always keep a hard copy of your web pages somewhere, either on a floppy, cd, or dvd. There are few things worse than customizing a web site and if something bad happens to your computer or hard drive, losing the web content forever.

    5) At this point, you probably already have uploaded your web site and have it online. Now you need to "drive" visitors to your site. One popular way of bringing traffic to your site is to use a free link exchange or free link trading service. For the free link exchange service, you just sign up and put a little bit of code on your "Pillow" web site (this allows other Pillow web site banners to be viewed on your site and vice versa). The free link trading service is very simple also. You simply add another pillow's link to your links page and vice versa. This trading of links increases your sites popularity greatly with the search engines. One of the most important things you can do to gain traffic is to get listed with the major search engines. Go to each search engine, or use a free service like and add your web site there. There is also what is called "pay-per-click" search engines where you actually pay for traffic sent to your web site. Other search engines require payment in order to get listed with them at all. "Yahoo" is one of these "pay" search engines.

    6) Please be advised that is illegal to "Spam" on the internet or via e-mail. Spamming is sending unwanted e-mails or putting internet advertising material, or internet material in general where it should not be. That being said, another method of marketing and promoting your site is to add your site to casino and gambling message boards and free for all links pages. Please check to see if it is ok to post your info there first, and in which category, and anywhere else before posting there. If you "Spam", you risk losing your internet service provider, and possibly your web host with all of your web content. It's just not worth the trouble.

    7) Another way of promoting your site is to add your web site address to your business cards, and/or make up flyers and posters. Don't forget to get permission before you post anything anywhere. If you have other web sites, add a banner and/or link to your "Pillow" site there. Make a t-shirt with your "Pillow" graphic and web address on it (on both sides of the t-shirt) for yourself to wear. If you want, add your "Pillow" graphic logo and web address to different products like baseball caps and coffee mugs, and give them away as promotional items. Buy an ad on a bus stop, or a small classified ad in the local paper, or radio ad, etc. How about getting two of those "12 inch x 12 inch" sticky, bendable, removable, flat, "magnet ads" made up at your local printing store to put on the sides of your vehicle's doors. When you drive around the city, every body will see your web site ad and when you get to your destination, simply take the sign off until you leave again. How about putting one of your "Pillow" flyers or small posters on the inside of your vehicle's rear side glass areas. Just make sure it doesn't obscure your vision. The idea is to use your creativity here.

    8) I hope these pointers are of good use to you. Good luck with your online web business!!!

Brees fires 4 TD passes, Saints rally past Bucs

    By FRED GOODALL

    AP Sports Writer

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 8:13 p.m. ET Oct. 21, 2012

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A chipper Jonathan Vilma gave New Orleans' struggling defense an emotional lift, while Drew Brees did the rest for the suddenly resurgent Saints.

Vilma played for the first time while appealing a season-long suspension for his role in the Saints' bounty program Sunday, finishing with one quarterback hit but no tackles in a 35-28 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"It's awesome to have him back," receiver Lance Moore said. "To go through the things that he's gone through individually, then to just kind of break through and get a chance to get out there, be with his teammates - he spoke to us last night, got us all fired up, and we had to come out here and play well."

While it's debatable how much Vilma's play impacted the defense, the Saints stopped two threats near the end zone in the second half, including the final drive of the game to preserve New Orleans' second straight win.

Brees, meanwhile, continued the stellar play the Saints (2-4) are counting on getting from him to turn their season around following an 0-4 start.

Brees extended his NFL record for consecutive games with at least one TD pass to 49, while leading long scoring drives on four straight possessions to turn a 14-point deficit into a 28-21 halftime lead.

Despite wasting two scoring opportunities - one when they four straight running plays failed from the Saints' 1 - Tampa Bay (2-4) still nearly found a way to get the game into overtime.

Josh Freeman marched the Bucs from their own 19 to the New Orleans 9 in the closing seconds. On the game's final play, Freeman rolled to his left before throwing to Mike Williams for an apparent tying touchdown.

But the receiver had been pushed out of the back of the end zone before coming back into the field of play. So, what appeared to be a possible tying catch was nullified for illegal touching.

Bucs coach Greg Schiano said he didn't see what happened on the play

"It really doesn't matter. If it's called, it's called. You live with it. There's nothing you can do about it," Schiano said. "So whether he did, didn't, we'll see it on tape. That's life."

Vilma was very business-like, answering questions while getting dressed in the New Orleans locker room. He said he wasn't sure how many snaps he played, but that he felt fine and believed he was in good enough condition to play an entire game.

The veteran linebacker said he had always believed he'd get an opportunity to play this season.

"Most people didn't, but it was a long, drawn-out process, and for good or bad, it ended up this way and I was able to be back on the field with my teammates. That was a great feeling," Vilma said.

"I talked to the team last night. I don't really want to get into it," Vilma added. "I think my talk, hopefully it worked since we won today."

Ronde Barber's first-quarter interception set up Freeman's 13-yard TD pass to Tiquan Underwood. Jackson had a 17-yard scoring reception and Doug Martin ran 36 yards for a touchdown for Tampa Bay.

The Saints (2-4) barely had the ball in the third quarter, but took advantage of Tampa Bay's inability to get into the end zone when Brees put together a 12-play, 95-yard march that Pierre Thomas finished with a 5-yard TD run that made it 35-21 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game.

Brees threw TD passes of 17 yards to Marques Colston, 9 yards to Darren Sproles, 48 yards to Joseph Morgan and 20 yards to David Thomas to overcome the New Orleans defense yielding 513 yards. He has thrown for three or more touchdowns in five of six games this season.

"We want to get on a streak here. You've got to win more than one before you're on a streak," Brees said. "So now we've got two, and we want to keep that going."

Freeman threw for a career-high 420 yards and three touchdowns for the Bucs (2-4), who scored on their first three possessions of the game to build a 21-7 lead. Dallas Clark's 3-yard scoring reception trimmed Tampa Bay's deficit to 35-28 with four minutes left, and Freeman completed two passes to Vincent Jackson to help the Bucs get into position to possibly force overtime.

Jackson had seven receptions for 216 yards, but failed to score on a 95-yard play in which safety Malcolm Jenkins ran him down to make the tackle at the Tampa Bay 1. LeGarrette Blount was stopped for no gain on three straight runs, then Freeman lost 4 yards on a quarterback keeper on fourth down.

Brees launched the Saints' final scoring drive from there. He also led TD drives of 80, 80, 79 and 72 on consecutive possessions in the opening half.

Vilma pressured Freeman on an incompletion that was nearly intercepted by Roman Harper, and got his hands on another pass that he tipped first with his right hand and then his left before it fell incomplete.

"Having him back just, emotionally, really made a difference in this game," interim Saints coach Aaron Kromer said. "We were trying to get him in in certain packages, and we had a couple of linebackers go down early in the game."

Brees said Vilma's presence made a difference.

"You could just feel how grateful he was (for) just the opportunity to get out there again, but also, just the intensity. He's just one of those guys, very vocal. He obviously knows guys very well, they know him, so his ability to say certain things at the right time and just provide a lift, whether it be just his productivity on the field or making a play, or something he would say, that presence was definitely felt this week," Brees said.

NOTES: Lance Moore had nine receptions for 121 yards for the Saints, which finished with 458 yards total offense. ... Tampa Bay's 513 yards total offense was a season-high. ... It was Kromer's last game as interim coach. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt returns from his suspension this week and will lead the Saints in Sean Payton's absence the rest of the season.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Eli Manning threw a 77-yard scoring pass to Victor Cruz with 1:13 to play and the New York Giants overcame a late touchdown by rookie sensation Robert Griffin III to defeat the Washington Redskins 27-23 on Sunday.

Manning's pass to Cruz came two plays and 19 seconds after Griffin capped what was a potential game-winning, 77-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Santana Moss. The rookie had kept the drive alive with a 19-yard pass off a desperate scramble on a fourth-and-10 play deep in his own territory and a 24-yard run on the next play.

Cruz, however, blew by Josh Wilson and Madieu Williams and the more than 80,000 fans in MetLife Stadium celebrated as Manning triumphantly pumped his fist.

Griffin had Washington moving for another score when Moss was tackle by Chase Blackburn after an 11-yard reception and rookie Jayron Hosley recovered at the Washington 43.

Romney: Obama campaign is 'incredible shrinking campaign'

Romney greets Ryan in Daytona Beach (Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.?Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama of running a campaign based on "petty attacks" and "silly word games" and accused his rival of having "no agenda" for the future.

"The Obama campaign has become the incredible shrinking campaign," Romney said at an oceanside rally here with his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan. "This is a big country with big opportunities and big challenges. And they keep talking about smaller and smaller things."

Romney's remarks appeared to be a response to Obama's charge Friday that the Republican nominee is suffering from "Romnesia" in distancing himself from his past policy positions.

Speaking to a crowd of several thousand people here, Romney turned the tables on his Democratic opponent, repeating his claim that Obama has laid out no specifics about what he would do if elected for a second term in the White House.

"Have you been watching the Obama campaign lately? It's absolutely remarkable. They have no agenda for the future. No agenda for America. No agenda for a second term," Romney said. "It's a good thing. They won't have a second term."

Romney insisted his campaign has "big ideas and bold ideas" and a "strong agenda."

Even as Romney and his running mate attracted a large crowd, Obama supporters could be heard in the distance chanting louder and louder?aiming to disrupt the GOP event. At one point, a man emerged on a hotel balcony overlooking the Romney-Ryan rally site and shouted, "OBAMA!!!"

This is Romney's last public event before Monday's final presidential debate in Boca Raton?about 200 miles south of here. The GOP nominee will spend Saturday and Sunday doing debate prep in Delray Beach, which is near the debate site.

Mars soil sample delivered for analysis inside rover

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has ingested its first solid sample into an analytical instrument inside the rover, a capability at the core of the two-year mission.

The rover's Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument is analyzing this sample to determine what minerals it contains.

"We are crossing a significant threshold for this mission by using CheMin on its first sample," said Curiosity's project scientist, John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "This instrument gives us a more definitive mineral-identifying method than ever before used on Mars: X-ray diffraction. Confidently identifying minerals is important because minerals record the environmental conditions under which they form."

The sample is a sieved portion -- about as much material as in a baby aspirin -- from the third scoop collected by Curiosity as a windblown patch of dusty sand called "Rocknest." The rover's robotic arm delivered the sample to CheMin's opened inlet funnel on the rover's deck on Oct. 17.

The previous day, the rover shook the scooped material inside sample-processing chambers to scrub internal surfaces of any residue carried from Earth. One earlier scoopful was also used for cleaning. Additional repetitions of this cleaning method will be used before delivery of a future sample to the rover's other internal analytic instrument, the Sample Analysis at Mars investigation, which studies samples' chemistry.

Various small bits of light-toned material on the ground at Rocknest have affected the rover's activities in the past several days. One piece about half an inch (1.3 centimeters) long was noticed on Oct. 7. The rover team postponed use of the robotic arm for two days while investigating this object, and assessed it to be debris from the spacecraft.

Images taken after Curiosity collected its second scoop of Rocknest material on Oct. 12 showed smaller bits of light-toned material in the hole dug by the scooping action. This led to discarding that scoopful rather than using it to scrub the processing mechanisms. Scientists assess these smaller, bright particles to be native Martian material, not from the spacecraft.

"We plan to learn more both about the spacecraft material and about the smaller, bright particles," said Curiosity Project Manager Richard Cook of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena. "We will finish determining whether the spacecraft material warrants concern during future operations. The native Mars particles become fodder for the mission's scientific studies."

During a two-year prime mission, researchers are using Curiosity's 10 instruments to assess whether the study area has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life. JPL, a division of Caltech, manages the project and built Curiosity. For more about Curiosity, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/msl , http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/msl and http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl .
